Boris
Slutsky
Born
in Moscow into a family of musicians, Boris
Slutsky immigrated to the United States
in 1977. His gave his orchestral debut at
Carnegie Hall with the New York Youth Symphony
in 1980. Just one year later he drew international
attention by sweeping every major prize
in the William Kapell (University of Maryland)
International Piano Competition. At nineteen
years of age and as the youngest competitor
he captured not only the First Prize, but
also the Audience Prize and the Wihelm Backhaus
Award. With his versatility and musical
authority he has garnered major prizes at
such widely diverse arenas as New York’s
Kosciuszko Chopin Competition and Toronto’s
International Bach Competition in Memory
of Glenn Gould, as well as the Busoni, Rina
Sala Gallo, and the Ettore Pozzoli International
Piano Competitions.
In subsequent years Mr. Slutsky appeared
on nearly every continent as soloist and
recitalist, collaborating with such eminent
conductors as Dimitri Kitaenko, Andrew Davis
and Valery Gergiev. He has performed with
the Bergen Philharmonic in Norway, the RAI
Orchestra in Milan, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie
Neuss am Rhein and Stuttgart State Orchestra
in Germany, Bern Symphony Orchestra in Switzerland,
KBS Symphony Orchestra in Korea, with orchestras
in Spain, Russia, Colombia and Brazil. In
South Africa he has been a soloist with
the orchestras of Capetown, Durban, and
Johannesburg. North American engagements
have included concerts with the Baltimore,
Florida, Utah and Toronto Symphonies, among
many others. Mr. Slutsky has given solo
recitals throughout the United States, in
France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Italy,
Russia, Canada, Latin America and the Far
East. He has been heard in such prestigious
venues as the Kennedy Center for the Performing
Arts, the Kaufmann Concert Hall, Tokyo’s
Bunka Kaikan, Taipei’s National Concert
Hall, Seoul’s Performing Arts Center, and
Teatro Colon in Bogota. He has been a guest
artist at the Stars of White Nights Festival
in St. Petersburg, Russia, International
Mikkeli Music Festival in Finland, and the
Rotterdam Philharmonic Philips Gergiev Festival.
As an active chamber
musician, Mr. Slutsky has performed with many
renowned artists. His most recognized chamber
collaborations have been with violinist Ilya
Kaler. Since 1992, the Slutsky-Kaler duo has
appeared in New York, Chicago, Boston, Washington,
Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and in major cities
throughout South Africa. They have been acclaimed
for their live performances as well as their
superb recording of the Schumann Violin and
Piano Sonatas on the Naxos label.
Mr. Slutsky received
his early training at Moscow’s Gnessin Academy
for Gifted Children as a student of Anna Kantor.
He completed his formal studies at the Juilliard
School and the Manhattan School of Music.
Throughout his career in the United States
he continued to work with his long time mentor
Alexander Eydelman.
Mr. Slutsky joined the
faculty of Peabody Conservatory of Music in
1993 where he served as the Piano Department
Chair from 2000 until 2003.
